How Many Zeros in a Billion? Zeros in Million, Trillion and Beyond

Published

A billion has 9 zeros: 1,000,000,000. That is 10^9, or one thousand million. The chart below gives the zero count for every common large number name, so you can check any of them quickly.

How many zeros in a billion

In modern English (the short scale), one billion is written 1,000,000,000. Count the zeros after the 1 and you get 9, written as 10^9. It equals 1,000 millions.

Some languages and older British texts use the long scale, where a billion means a million millions. In that system a billion has 12 zeros. If a source could be using either system, writing 10^9 or 10^12 removes the doubt.

Quick answers

Zeros in lakh and crore

The Indian numbering system groups digits differently. One lakh is 1,00,000, which has 5 zeros and equals one hundred thousand. One crore is 1,00,00,000, which has 7 zeros and equals ten million. So one billion is 100 crore.

How to count zeros without a chart

Each short-scale name from million onward has a Latin prefix that gives a number n. The zero count is 3n + 3. Billion uses bi (2), so 3 × 2 + 3 = 9. Trillion uses tri (3), so 3 × 3 + 3 = 12.

For a number already written out, add commas every three digits from the right. Each full group of 000 adds three zeros, so 1,000,000,000 has three groups and 9 zeros.

Check it with the calculator

Enter 10 as the base and 9 as the exponent in the power calculator. The result is 1,000,000,000, the digit count shows 10 digits (a 1 plus 9 zeros), and the words section reads it as one billion.
